Man and mountain
Experience Reinhold Messner’s legacy at the Messner Mountain Museums
Extreme mountaineer, adventurer, author, former politician and now museum founder: Reinhold Messner was the first person to climb all eight-thousanders without bottled oxygen and is now one of the best-known South Tyroleans. In 2003, he opened the first Messner Mountain Museum at Castel Firmiano near Bolzano, followed by five more branches. These museums explore the relationship between humans and mountains, including exhibits on Himalayan cultures and the history of South Tyrol.
