Castles in the sky

Europe’s castle capital

Fans of medieval times and those interested in art, architecture and history will find their Mecca in the area around Appiano! 800 castles, palaces and manor houses can be found in South Tyrol, 200 of them around Appiano. This is due to the great strategic and economic importance that the area had back then and still has today as one of the most important Alpine crossings.

A good selection

In and around Appiano, you will find, for example, Castel Hocheppan, Castel Boymont, the ruins of the Leuchtenburg above Lake Caldaro, Castel Sigmundskron with the Messner Mountain Museum, Castel Warth, and Castel Runkelstein. Those wishing to travel further can visit Castel Tirolo and Castel Trauttmansdorff with its gardens near Merano, the Churburg in the Val Venosta, and the Fortezza in the Valle Isarco. We would be happy to provide you with further information on access, opening times, and visiting opportunities.

Historical significance

The splendid buildings, often constructed on rocky outcrops and in hard-to-reach places, testify to the turbulent history of the region. Many castles offer guided tours, including for children, some serve as museums, and others are still inhabited today. You can admire not only impressive vaults but also many places with intricate frescoes and original furniture.
